Class starts on 1/8 and finishes on 1/15. \n— \nIn this fun and approachable two-part workshop\, you’ll create a beautiful\, handcrafted leather luggage tag while learning the foundational skills of leatherworking. Whether you’re new to working with leather or looking to sharpen your skills\, this class offers a complete introduction to essential tools\, techniques\, and finishing methods. By the end\, you’ll leave with a professional-quality tag that’s durable\, stylish\, and uniquely yours. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nUnderstand different types and weights of leather and their uses\nLearn how to design\, cut\, dye\, and sew a small leather project\nPractice saddle stitching\, edge finishing\, and applying protective topcoats\nGain confidence using traditional hand tools such as pricking irons\, bevelers\, and burnishers\n\nClass 1: Introduction to Leatherwork & Design\nWe’ll begin with an overview of leather types\, tools\, and best practices\, referencing helpful resources like the 4H Leatherworking Manual. Students will choose a luggage tag template\, select leather dye and thread colors\, and begin construction. You’ll learn to trace and cut your leather\, punch stitching holes with pricking irons\, and practice applying dye on test scraps before dyeing your final piece. (Gloves and aprons are provided — come dressed for creativity!) \nClass 2: Stitching & Finishing Techniques\nIn the second session\, you’ll apply a protective finish to seal your dyed leather\, then learn the art of saddle stitching — a strong\, beautiful method of hand sewing. Next\, we’ll focus on edge work: beveling\, sanding\, burnishing\, and sealing for a clean\, finished look. You’ll also have the option to dye your edges for a polished result. \nThis class is designed to be both educational and satisfying. You’ll complete a fully functional leather luggage tag\, and also walk away with the skills and confidence to continue exploring leathercraft on your own.
